A air conditioning system in the summer time works by moving the heat from inside your home and expelling it outside. A heat pump air conditioning system has the ability to operate both ways. In the summer time it removes the heat from your home and in the winter time it takes the heat from the outside air and brings it inside. This method of heating is 3 times more efficient then traditional electric heat (heat strip).
Air conditioning works by removing the heat from inside your home. Heat can not be created or destroyed it can only be moved. Therefore when the air in your home is pulled through the return air grilles the heat in the air is absorbed by the refrigerant flowing through the indoor coil located inside your air handler. This cools the air and this air is blown through the supply grilles throughout your home. The heat that has been absorbed by the refrigerant is then carried through the copper lines and distributed in the coil located in the outdoor unit or condenser. The fan in the condenser pulls cooler air over the coil and the refrigerant is cooled and pumped back inside to begin the cycle again.
